In November 2019, Snake Union had a residency at EMS (Elektronmusikstudion) in Stockholm, Sweden. We spent a full week in this beautiful studio around-the-clock, sometimes only seeing the Scandinavian fall sun for a few minutes during lunch break. We were almost never more than 6 feet apart the entire time, working side by side on the legendary Buchla 200 & Serge Modular systems, and then staying in bunk beds on a boat hotel directly across the street.

We returned to the recordings in 2020, working on editing and mixing the trove of material we generated in our busy week. Certain tracks called out for overdubs and collaboration: we were pleased when Rachelle Rahmé and Jessica Pavone agreed to add their poetry and viola, respectively. Snake Union also reached back into our shared past as vocalists, both of us taking on voice duties in select songs.

To Whom I’ve Never Met and Only Imagined takes its title from a line in Rachelle’s poem. To us the words spoke of the isolation of quarantine, and the desire for escape or comfort; the imagining of another being. We are very excited for everyone to hear this sonic sci-fi world we have made. We recommend playing it loud in a dark room, or zoning out with headphones through a long night…much like it was created.
